 By Kathy Yarush

My name is Kathy Yarush and I am happy to say that I am a Cancer Survivor.   I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2012. Because I faced numerous surgeries, a full year of chemotherapy, and six weeks of radiation, I experienced a range of emotions: worry because my survival rate was 70%, anger because I had been getting regular mammograms but didn’t know that dense breasts could hide large tumors, surprise because I was young and didn’t have a family history of cancer, anxiousness because of money, and fear because of the amount and nature of the treatment that I faced.   I attribute my ultimate well-being to prayers, my faith in God, my positive attitude, and to all the tremendous support and prayers that I received. Valley Center Press: Upholding a Tradition of Local Journalism

Recently the Valley Center Press celebrated its first year of existence. Now, you may be saying, hasn’t the Valley Center Press only published three print editions, starting with one in November?

That’s true, but the area’s newest newspaper got its start as a social media news site (www.valleycenterpress.com) last spring, where it gradually began to build up a loyal readership via Facebook. Dana Chisholm, publisher of Trail Media, a book publisher and longtime resident of Valley Center, founded the VC Press.

The Valley Center Press combines aspects of a social media site with those of a news site. Members (anyone can sign up) can post their own news or comments, but at the same time the Press has a staff of professional journalists of long standing in Valley Center, including Dan Kidder, managing editor and sports editor, and David Ross, editor-in-chief. "My daughter recommended David after he did a kitchen remodel in her home. He was able to do several diverse home repairs from door framing to plastering around my interior window frames. He is always able to assess the most efficient and cost effective way to do things and it has always turned out even better than anticipated. He gives an upfront quote and time frame and sticks to that well. I will always give David a call when I need a job done. Thanks for the porch steps. We are enjoying them."

Making Your Dreams Reality

cal fire are you ready

Flying embers destroy homes up to a mile from wildland areas. Prepare (harden) your home now before fire starts.

Here are some things you can do to harden your home and make it more fire resistant:

Roof: The roof is the most vulnerable part of your home. Homes with wood or shingle roofs are at high risk of being destroyed during a wildfire.
  • Build your roof or re-roof with materials such as composition, metal or tile.

  • Block any spaces between roof decking and covering to prevent embers from catching.

Vents: Vents on homes create openings for flying embers.

  • Cover all vent openings with 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch metal mesh. Do not  use fiberglass or plastic mesh because they can melt and burn.

  • Protect vents in eaves or cornices with baffles to block embers. (Mesh  is not enough.)

Trees & Brush: Trim trees and clear brush and debris away from house

cosmic solar solutions

earth day

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency easy-to-fix household leaks account for more than one trillion gallons of water wasted each year across the United States. Check your fixtures and stop leaks, either on your own or by reminding your landlord. If you're shopping for new fixtures or plumbing, look for the WaterSense label.

The Power of Solar:
By Pey Shadzi
Our Sun produces enough power in one second to satisfy the total energy demand of the people of our planet for the next 500 years. Today, if we were to install solar panels in only about 3% of the earth's deserts, we would produce more than enough power to provide the energy required by the entire world.

Solar Power is clean, inexhaustible, and easy to harness through advancing technologies and products that are readily available today. Today's technologies and products are becoming more and more accessible, affordable, and available to homes, businesses, and institutions across the United States and the rest of the world. Read more

May 25th - National Missing Children’s Day

On May 25, 1979, six-year-old Etan Patz disappeared from a New York street corner on his way to school. His photo, taken by his father, a professional photographer, was circulated nationwide and appeared in media across the nation and around the world. The widespread attention brought to Etan’s case and several others eventually led to a nationwide movement to help locate and recover missing children. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25th, the day that Etan went missing – as National Missing Children’s Day. Since then, each administration has recognized this day as a time to renew efforts to reunite missing children with their families, remember those who are still missing, and make child safety a national priority.

Take 25 campaign was created by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in honor of National Missing Children's Day.  Learn more about Take 25 here....
