The Perfect Picnic...Indoors or Out!
Hosting a picnic should be fun, festive, and light-hearted. Whether you are dining alfresco, on a screened porch, or just want to create the “look and feel” of a picnic, here are some innovative ideas to impress your guests. Rule number one: forget the traditional red and white checked tablecloth. Think pink…or red…or mixing the two together! You can dress up traditional picnic fare and still keep it casual by using high quality everyday tableware like Chili Culinaria and Stafford Mirror. Notice the subtle yet dramatic silhouette of the flatware resting on the table. It’s the little details in the design of a piece that makes a big difference in your overall presentation.Decorating tip: If you don’t have bold fabric, you can create a similar look by placing wide black ribbon across the top of a solid colored tablecloth for dramatic striped effect. You’ll find ribbon (by the spool) at fabric and variety stores and it’s a very reasonable alternative. Or, fashion an attractive tablerunner by lining up square napkins (point to point) in alternating colors down the center of the table. Don’t forget to place a lit candle or large lantern in the center of each one. Lighting is very important and enhances the mood. Another easy way to create ambiance… string indoor /outdoor lights around the room, patio, garden and potted plants. When planning your party, pay attention to what fruits and vegetables are in season. They will be plentiful and inexpensive. Use them as decorations, accents and in all your meals. Lemons and limes nestled in a tall glass jar, or a small pumpkin wrapped in grapevine, is an attractive focal point that is simple to make. Break up solid colored dinnerware by layering a contrasting napkin between plates and bowls. Invent new uses for your dinnerware pieces… the handled mug becomes a handy bowl when paired with a spoon. Float a candle in a wine glass at each place setting. And don’t forget to offer your guests special drinks. Tall clear stemware is the perfect vehicle for a cold mohito with fresh mint. Think outside the box… your guests will notice and appreciate your extra effort. P.S. Don’t forget citronella to keep the bugs at bay.
